In the video, Tom sheds some light on his struggles with mental health: He starts the almost 3-minute-long video by sharing that he has been struggling to record his message for his 67 million followers on Instagram. Even with his vast acting experience, it took him over an hour to record the short video. I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online. And ultimately, it’s very detrimental to my mental state. He also mentioned that he deleted the apps during his break. Checking his social media accounts, he last posted on Instagram six weeks ago and last tweeted in February 2022.
Two Charities
Tom Holland highlights two charities that help people cope with mental health struggles. The two charities that the Spider-Man actor proudly supports are stem4 and The Brothers Trust. The UK-based charity stem4 has created an educational program, website, and four apps mainly to help teens who are struggling with mental health. The apps help prevent teens from committing self-harm, reduce anxiety, improve moods and encourage family members to extend support to loved ones struggling with mental health issues. The Brothers Trust was created by the Holland family to help raise donations for other charities. The funds they raise are then distributed to all the other charities they support.
Talking about Mental Health
Many who suffer from mental health conditions find it difficult to communicate to others about their struggles. The stigma associated with mental illnesses is what prevents most people from opening up about the topic. In his post, Tom Holland encourages everyone to continue to talk about mental health. He writes at the end of his message “Love to you all, and let’s get talking about mental health ❤️”. Here is the full video message from Tom Holland:
