Many consider 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as one of the best open-world RPGs of its generation. The game’s massive environment was only equaled by the amount of stuff that you could do, which includes Gwent. The card game was part of a series of side-quests in Wild Hunt that eventually spawned a standalone title, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game in 2018. However, the free-to-play digital collectible card game focused more on the multiplayer aspect of the game, much to the disappointment of fans who preferred a solo experience. Fast forward to today and IGN’s recent reveal confirms that CDPR wants to fix that glaring “issue”. Projekt Golden Nekker is a new Gwent game scheduled to launch this year with CDPR’s in-house Gwent team at the helm. The game is described as a “captivating single-player experience.” CDPR’s Gwent Comms Lead, Pawel Burza, explained that the upcoming Gwent game is “not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different.” He adds that the team is working hard to turn it into something special for players who aren’t huge fans of the competitive side of Gwent. The game that Burza is talking about is Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. The 2018 title used the same mechanics of the card game focused on a campaign mode featuring Queen Meve, the monarch of Lyria and Rivia. The Witcher Tales was a commercial and critical success. In particular, critics and gamers alike found it surprising that CDPR found a way to use Gwent to tell an effective tale centered on Queen Meve’s attempt to retake the Northern territories. Unfortunately, CDPR did not confirm when exactly it plans to formally reveal Project Golden Nekker this year along with a proper release date. For now, The Witcher fans can keep themselves busy watching re-runs of the first two seasons of Netflix’s live-action adaptation ahead of the release of the series’ sequel, Blood Origin, later this year. Speaking of The Witcher, pre-production of season 3 of Netflix’s popular fantasy action series has officially started with filming expected to kick off in a few months. Meanwhile, fans are expecting CDPR to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 soon.
