It’s as if the floodgates opened as soon as Sony and Marvel Studios struck a deal to bring Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016. Now, there’s at least one Spider-Man project coming almost every year. In fact, had it not been for the Spider-Verse delay, audiences would have gone seven years straight of seeing the Web-Head swing his way to a video game console or into theaters. Instead, we’ll have to settle with a six-year streak, which isn’t half-bad all things considered. Having said that, we should consider the current “break” from Spider-Man the calm before the storm. With a handful of Spider-Man projects in the works at the moment, we might go a decade of seeing Jonah Jameson’s favorite Masked Vigilante in a big project starting in 2023. Until then, we’ll have to settle with tidbits of news that we can get our hands on, starting with what Tom Rothman just shared with Deadline. According to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s CEO and Chairman, Sony is deep into its “three tranches” of Spider-Man projects, which include the two Spider-Verse sequels and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe movies. Rothman then answered that Sony is hoping to bring back the “whole group” for the next Spider-Man movie in the MCU when asked if Jon Watts as well as stars Tom Holland and Zendaya are turning for Spider-Man 4. It’s nice to know that Sony wants Watts to come back for another MCU film. Watts recently stepped down from helming Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot, explaining that he’d like to rest from superhero flicks in the meantime. Unfortunately, this also suggests that Sony and Marvel Studios will wait until Watts is ready, which might take a while. Sony has its upcoming slate of Spider-Man movies all planned out. Even if the fourth solo film for Spider-Man for the MCU isn’t confirmed yet, Sony is using this time to build its own cinematic universe that could one day feature a Spider-Man. Rothman explained that Sony is currently shooting Kraven the Hunter, which is set to release on January 13, 2023. After this, Sony is set to start production on S.J. Clarkson’s Madame Web film starring Dakota Johnson, which will premiere on July 7, 2023. As Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will come out on June 2, 2023, with the sequel also coming and Venom 3 on the docket on top of Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, audiences will miss Tom Holland but not necessarily Spider-Man. Hopefully, all these Spider-Man projects will encourage Sony to greenlight Amazing Spider-Man 3 with Andrew Garfield and Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire.
