Tarantino, who has directed several iconic films over the years such as Pulp fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds, declared that he’s not a big fan of superhero movies. In his words, “You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” The Pulp Fiction director also gave his opinions on the box office dominance of superhero movies. He stated that many filmmakers look forward to when superhero movies will lose their dominance in a much similar way to how “60s anti-establishment auteurs rejoiced when studio musical adaptations fell out of favor.” However, he admitted that the genre is not close to losing its dominance at the moment. Tarantino is not the first auteur to criticize Marvel Studios and its enormous franchise. Martin Scorsese, another legendary filmmaker, dismissed the MCU in 2019. The Taxi Driver director described MCU movies as theme parks due to their tendency to cater to spectacle and opined that they are not cinema. Other highly rated filmmakers who have criticized the MCU are Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, and Bong-Joon Ho, who are well known for The Godfather, Gladiator, and Parasite respectively. Following Scorsese’s statements, Tarantino said the following words in a 2020 interview with Deadline: The director explained that a lot of original movie content was released and “demanded to be seen at the theaters.” According to him, this occurrence ensured that 2019 was a really strong year for original movie content. He continued by stating that if movies like that hadn’t held their own, “it might have been the last stand for movies like that.” However, Tarantino admitted he likes Star Wars. The director stated that he found the film immersive. Specifically, he said, “When the lights came on, I felt like a million dollars. And I looked around and had this moment of recognition, thinking, ‘Wow! What a time at the movies!” Nevertheless, Tarantino confessed it isn’t his kind of film. He stated that he leans more toward films like Close Encounter. He credited the movie’s awesome plot and Steven Spielberg’s effort to make it an epic for both cinephiles and regular audiences as the main reasons for this. Having said that, Tarantino has stated that his next movie will be his final feature film. It’s believed that he’s working on a third installment of Kill Bill, but it’s also possible that he’s thinking of something else. This is understandable given that he’ll want to end his glorious career on a high note. Nevertheless, the end of his career as a film director doesn’t mean he won’t helm another film as there’ve been reports he will direct episodes of a television series. Speaking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel’s Nate Moore recently clarified where Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fits in the MCU timeline. Also, the studio is working on a duo of spinoffs inspired by Black Panther.
