However, while Cage is no stranger to playing all sorts of characters, he’s probably set to play one of his weirdest yet as he has reportedly signed on to star as Dracula in Robert Kirkman’s Renfield.
Cage will play Dracula in a more comedic take on the classic novel
The Walking Dead’s creator Robert Kirkman is now set to work on a new project based on the undead. Unlike his most popular work though, Renfield is set to center around the titular acolyte and henchman (played by Nicholas Hoult) instead of the iconic vampire from the iconic gothic horror novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula. Renfield reportedly started development in late 2019 with Ryan Ridley writing the script and Dexter Fletcher signing on to act as the film’s director. Unfortunately, the film didn’t gain any traction until earlier this year when Chris McKay was in talks to replace Fletcher as the film’s director as well as the producer. It didn’t take long for news of Nicholas Hault’s signing as the titular role to break out followed by this next big step. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicolas Cage will star opposite Hoult in the Netflix film. The said report also confirms that McKay is now official the film’s director and producer with Kirkman also producing the film under Skybound Entertainment. The film’s other producers are David Alpert, as well as Bryan and Sean Furst. With the film’s two main characters now confirmed, it’s probably only a matter of time before the production for Renfield kicks off. Interestingly enough, this isn’t Cage’s first time playing as a vampire. Back in the late 80s, Cage played the role of a vampire in 1988’s Vampire’s Kiss. The film flopped hard among critics and audiences but gained a cult following ever since largely due to Cage’s exaggerated mannerisms as he tried to portray a man who believes that he’s going to become a vampire. In the meantime, fans can catch Cage in Pig, which earned him critical acclaim for his performance as a recluse who is friends with a foraging pig. In addition to Renfield, Cage is also expected to star in at least four different films going forward, including The Old Way.
