Xbox console players are experiencing an irritating error when playing with a keyboard and mouse. The error pops up saying, ‘You need a controller for this game,’ with a huge pop-up on the screen interrupting the game in the middle. This can be frustrating if you’re playing online games such as Apex Legends. Apparently, the error is quite old, and many are experiencing it recently, probably due to a surge in keyboard & mouse players on Xbox consoles. This was indicated as a user name SlamDeath36 posted a picture of them experiencing the same error due to the exact same reason back in November of 2021 on an Xbox forum. With Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision and new Xbox Game Pass announcements, it won’t be a surprise if PC players are buying Xbox consoles to reap the benefits. Hence, the recent rise in popularity of this ancient error. The error occurs due to how the console detects the keyboard and mouse. The console detects the controller as the default input device for gaming. When you connect the keyboard and mouse, they are, in essence, “emulating” the controller. For this reason, the controller always needs to be connected and powered on for the keyboard and mouse to work. Fortunately, you can try a couple of fixes that may solve your issue.
Fix 1: As stated, the controller and the keyboard and mouse are interconnected in this matter. Ensure that your controller is powered on at all times. This can be guaranteed if you use a USB cable to connect your controller to the console for a constant power supply. Fix 2: The second solution is to simply restart your game. Fix 3: If restarting the game doesn’t work, you can take a more quotidian approach and restart your console. If nothing else works, restarting the console should certainly fix the error.
We hope that one of the above fixes helped you solve this error!
