She added that the toll of working on the show and the first film at the same time “nearly killed the animators.” In addition to this, the other show’s executives are also thinking about whether a follow-up would do better if it is released exclusively in theaters, or if it made its debut on a streaming service. While Jean might have declined to provide more details about the potential sequel, it’s clear that the people behind the show are at least open to the idea. Of course, it remains to be seen if The Simpsons Movie 2 will happen. Jean’s conundrum about releasing the film in theaters or on streaming platforms is valid. The initial The Simpsons Movie netted a ton of profit for the studio and a sequel could enjoy similar returns. But, at the same time, there is that risk that The Simpsons Movie 2 would not do as well and end up damaging the show’s reputation instead. Not to mention, movie theaters haven’t recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic yet and it might take a while before this will happen.
