Fast forward to 2022 and the beloved video game publisher just confirmed that it’s set to add an entirely new franchise to its portfolio. According to an official blog post, Blizzard is working on a new intellectual property. However, unlike with Overwatch, the latest announcement from the makers of StarCraft did not come with much fanfare. Instead, all Blizzard did was give audiences a small glimpse into the new universe that the studio plans on creating. But, upon further digging, we found a recruitment post on Blizzard’s website describing its upcoming new game as a survival game for PC and consoles. While this is undoubtedly good news, fans probably shouldn’t expect Blizzard to release this new game anytime soon. The studio still has several other sequels on the docket, such as Diablo IV, Diablo Immortal, and Overwatch 2. Having said that, the reveal is a cause for celebration as well. Blizzard hasn’t released a new game in a long time. After delaying most of its upcoming games multiple times and reports of toxic workplace culture, Blizzard needed a win regardless of how small it was. By confirming that it is working on a new project, Blizzard reassured fans that the studio is still planning. Even if Blizzard’s new game is still years away, this hasn’t stopped fans from speculating what it could be like. One of the more prominent theories is that the survival title would use Blizzard’s signature art style and blend it with traditional survival elements from games such as Valheim, if not Minecraft. Ultimately, only Blizzard knows what its newest IP is going to be like and when it’s going to be released. For now, all fans can do is rejoice for one of the few good pieces of news that has come out from Blizzard in recent months. Coincidentally, Blizzard’s latest statement comes on the heels of the Microsoft acquisition. Seeing as current Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is expected to step down once the deal is finalized, Blizzard’s survival game should be the company’s first project while under the new management. Here’s to hoping that Microsoft can help correct Blizzard’s course and lead the prestigious company to a brighter and better future.
